This bird was around for a few days at the end of last winter, in Manhattan around 39th Street between 8th and 9th Avenue. This was the only clear shot I got of it. About 8 inches long, rather grubby with soot but seemed to be dark greyish-brown on top with some white wing patches, and a light grey below. Was hanging out with starlings and sparrows; much larger than the sparrows, beak way to chunky for a starling I think.There's some spots a block or two west of there, where I have seen juncos and various native sparrows, so it's not absurd that it was some migrant (Maybe some kind of Grosbeak?) who decided this was a good place to rest a while. No accounting for taste.
