What is this bird? (To summarize the discussion below: it's an immature starling. Which is good, because a Dipper would have been way lost.) I spotted him playing at the water's edge in a running shallow stream in the Ramble in Central Park (New York City), just north of the spot I think is called "Azelea Pond". There was a young Blue Jay bathing in the stream; I would say this bird was somewhat smaller (mostly in the tail), maybe the size of an adult starling.My wife, an experienced birder, took one look at this picture and said "Dipper". It does look like pictures of juvenile American Dippers, but if so it's so far East it's not funny, and why has nobody spotted the parents before?(Siting was Sunday July 26 about one in the afternoon, Weather was partly sunny, about 80F; the area around the stream is shady and humid.)The previous three pictures in my stream are another crop of this bird, and the two OOTC jpegs.
